چکیده

Mullainathan, Schwartzstein, & Shleifer [Quarterly Journal of Economics, May 2008] put forward a model of coarse thinking. The essential idea behind coarse thinking is that agents put situations into categories and then apply the same model of inference to all situations in a given category. We extend the argument to strategies in a game-theoretic setting and propose the following: Agents split the choice-space into categories in comparison with salient choices and then choose each option in a given category with equal probability. We provide an alternative explanation for the puzzling results obtained in a Bertrand competition experiment as reported in Abbink & Brandts [Games and Economic Behavior, 63, 2008] JEL Classification: C90, C72, D43, D83, L13

Bertrand-nash Equilibrium in the Retail Duopoly Model under Asymmetric Costs

In this paper, the Bertrand's price competition in the retail duopoly with asymmetric costs is analyzed. Retailers sell substitute products in the framework of the classical economic order quantity (EOQ) model with linear demand function. The market potential and competitor price are considered to be the bifurcation parameters of retailers. Levels of the barriers to market penetration depending...

Price and quantity competition in a differentiated duopoly

• Two classical models in the theory of oligopoly are those of Coumot (1838) and Bertrand (1883). In both models the equilibrium concept is the noncooperative equilibrium of Nash (1950). In the former firms set quantities. In the latter prices are the strategy variables. In a duopoly situation where firms produce a homogeneous good and marginal costs are constant and equal for both firms, the B...

Quality Uncertainty as Resolution of the Bertrand Paradox

We show that in a homogeneous-good duopoly market with quality uncertainty and constant unit costs, the Bertrand paradox (i.e., marginal cost pricing) can be avoided.

First Follower’s Real Option to revert to the Competitive Strategy Low & High Price Point Collusion Capacities

Drawing from ideas of collusion in option games model with Cournot competition and price competition in a differentiated duopoly, we model, in a binomial framework, the latent collusion opportunity open to a first-follower. The first-follower is faced with investment decision in production capacity under market uncertainty as well as competitive uncertainty. The firstfollower has an opportunity...

Cartel Stability, Mark-Up Cyclicality and Government Spending Multipliers

Mark-up cyclical behaviour is relevant in determining the size of government spending multiplier on output. While theoretical literature priviliged the counteryclical hypothesis, empirical evidence is far from being conclusive. Based on seminal Rotemberg and Saloner (1986) contribution, we build a theoretical framework based on Bertrand duopoly, stochastic demand and product di¤erentiation, whe...
